Centrum is one of the most popular multivitamin brands available. You’ve probably seen the commercials and noticed their products on the drug store shelves… but does all that popularity mean it’s effective? If everyone else jumped off a cliff… would you do it too?
Since I’m under 50 years old, I looked at Centrum Adults Under 50 for this review. Did it stack up? Let’s see…
What is Centrum Adults Under 50?
This multivitamin is specifically formulated for… well you guessed it, adults under 50. It’s supposed to boost vitality, energy, and focus. In addition, you get the added benefits of lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and a more robust immune system.
That’s what it is supposed to do. But does it work? Yes, it does work…
…but not as well as it should. I’ll explain why.
All of Centrum’s multivitamins are made from the cheapest synthetic sources available. A quick way to check the quality of a multivitamin is to look at the Vitamin E, to see if it comes from an all natural, food based source (In my review for VGF 25+, I talk about the difference between synthetic and natural vitamins).
If the Vitamin E uses the “dl” version of a vitamin, that means it’s synthetic. If it uses the “d” version, then it’s natural. If you look on the label it should specify which one it is. Centrum multivitamins use the “dl” version and Centrum Adults Under 50 is no different.
Synthetic vitamins are less than half as effective as natural ones. Why is that? Because synthetic sourced vitamins do not have the digestive enzymes that promote absorption. Moreover, your body tends to reject artificial supplements in general.
What ends up happening is that your body passes the vitamins right on through, and you’re effectively just making really expensive urine.
Centrum Adults Under 50 gives you an energy boost and fortifies your immune system like it says it will…
…but the problem is that it does a very bad job at it. You could get an all natural, food sourced multivitamin for the same price that is four times as effective.
Keep in mind that specific results are not guaranteed and experiences may vary.
I’ve already talked about the synthetic Vitamin E. Centrum also wants to shorten our lives, it seems, by including hydrogenated oils (which are linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes) in their multivitamins. In addition to this, Centrum Adults Under 50 has negligible amounts of some vitamins.
For example: There’s only 60 mg of vitamin C. How much is 60 mg? You get 240 mg of vitamin C out of an entire orange. So that’s like having two orange slices.
Pros and Cons
It’s cheap! That’s pretty good.
Provides a moderate benefit.
Uses extremely cheap ingredients.
Not nearly as effective as the competition.
Contains hydrogenated oils.
Gives you expensive, vitamin rich pee.
